Addition & Interior Renovation

The project calls for the remodeling of an industrial brick building and the addition of a new three story steel frame building to collectively house a 12,000 sq ft microbrewery and restaurant in New Hope, Pennsylvania. The site lies along a former rail line and includes a large existing train platform. Currently, the line is used exclusively for a local “tourist” train that terminates at the site.

The design solution was inspired by its industrial context. The existing structure of the building shell was opened up and exposed to to view. Likewise, the beer-making process is exposed behind a new interior facade of steel and glass. The bar with its mezzanine balcony is treated as an independent dynamic element within the space. In juxtaposition to the regularity of the existing brick building, this new object “breaks through” the existing facade to activate the railroad platform now redesigned as an outdoor dining area.
